Well, it’s October 2018 now, and I am just getting around to writing this post! So many things have been happening and I couldn’t update the blog, AT ALL.
First up for 2017, I started off with an absolutely cray cray January! I remember, the first weekend of 2017, I had a monster week of cakes. There were so many weddings, and one of the cakes is on my Top Ten list, actually. Then, the following weekend, I had another busy week with 15 custom cakes, including 5 wedding cakes in one weekend! So suffice to say, my Top Ten Cakes of 2016 post, got postponed to only this year! LOL!
Then, January and February got taken over with private classes, upon private classes, PLUS my SOLD OUT CLASS IN NEW YORK CITY in March 2017! Followed, by a 3 week holiday in Florida, Mexico and Spain! More on that in a later post 🙂 So when I got back, it was picking up the business where I left off, and slowly but surely, planning an even bigger move.
Anyhooo…back to the Top Ten Cakes of 2017!!
10. Vintage Book Cake
Coming in at number 10, was a cake for a lady who loved reading and drinking tea 🙂 Such a wonderful design in terms of colour, prints and overall feel. Loved this one so much!
9. Cargo Ship
This was a fun one to construct! A cargo ship cake! When it came together, it looked totally awesome, and the client was thriled with the result!
8. River Intake
2017 was filled with all sorts of novelty cakes to challenge my mind! This one was a River Intake station. Say what?? When I got the brief, it was such an unusual cake to make, so I decided to make it into a competition, for everyone to Guess The Next Cake! The competition was such a hit, and I got dozens of creative entries, such as a carwash, to a sausage maker LOL! Needless to say, someone did eventually hit it on the nail and she won the Grand Prize of a cake worth RM500 from me!
And here is the winner of the “Guess the Next Cake” Competition!
7. Sultan of Perak’s Birthday
A mammoth of a cake, made at the very last minute, for the Sultan of Perak’s birthday! Love the crown! We delivered it to the Palace in Ipoh, Perak.
6. Tension Leg Platform
Another first for us! We had to make Malaysia’s very first TLP in cake form, to celebrate this momentous occasion by Shell. Over in the coast of Sabah, lies Malaysia’s first Tension Leg Platform, and to celebrate this event, we were commissioned to make the exact replica in cake form! Another fun project, this was!
5. Food Cakes!!
I couldn’t choose between these 3. They turned out SO realistic that I, myself was very impressed with my work. Hahaha!! *syiok sendiri 😛 Everyone knows that I love everything and anything to do with food, and to make it into sugar and cake form, well, that is my most favourite thing to do!!! Here is the Big Mac meal cake, a bowl of Malaysian curry laksa noodles, and also a pork noodle dish, with intestines and liver. Oh YUM!! Do y’all remember my Bak Kut Teh cake? The one, that started the craze?!!
4. Justin and Adrienne
Wedding cakes, oh so pretty, and very therapeutic to make! Justin and Adrienne’s cake, featured 5 tiers, of clean, white icing, but she wanted a wow effect with the sugar flowers. So wow, is what she got! We made hundreds and hundreds of hydrangeas and roses for weeks!!
3. Alice in Wonderland
This theme, opens up Pandora’s Box. Simply because, THERE ARE A MILLION THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THIS CAKE!!! However, with no budget constraints, this makes it even harder to decide what to do!! We did 2 awesome Alice in Wonderland cakes in 2017, so both deserve a place in my Top 3 of 2017!
2. Nursery Rhymes Carnival
TOUGH, TOUGH DECISION FOR SECOND PLACE!! But, here it is. Coming in at second place, was the Nursery Rhymes cake with did for Lili, the granddaughter of the Sultan of Johor. This was a big cake, and it was ordered at the very last minute, during an extremely busy week, I recall. The amount of figurines we made in record time, plus getting all the other orders ready in time. When it’s busy, it’s damn freaking busy! But I love it though!! With only 2 other staff at the time, everything got done in record time!!
1. Beauty and the Beast
I almost didn’t do this cake!! The client was hunting me down for months, leading up to the event. I try my best to keep up with all enquiries, in a timely fashion. I really do. But, it is totally impossible for me to answer WhatsApp queries, Instagram DM’s, Facebook messages, emails and phone calls, PLUS design cakes, and making the cakes, stock control and staff management, all in one day. So one day, when I was at a Bridal Fair, she turned up at my stand. And right there and there, she said, book ME IN NOW! Here’s the design, this is the date. Please do it. So I said, ok leave that with me, you will get your Beauty and the Beast cake on the said date.
I am so glad I did this cake in the end, because it went viral all over the world! With 147K views on FB, 3500 shares on FB and 37K views on Instagram, and thousands of comments!!!
What a beauty this was! I can’t wait to do another one 🙂
So there you have it, 2017’s round up of my best cakes! 2018 is almost done, will update again soon, with the opening of my very first, retail store!
